Inflammaging

What is Inflammaging?
Inflammaging testing examines how cosmetic ingredients affect persistent, low-grade inflammatory responses associated with skin ageing. Cell and tissue models measure cytokines and related stress or senescence markers to investigate a formulation’s activity under defined laboratory conditions.
Why do you need this service?
Inflammaging studies investigate selected inflammatory responses associated with ageing in defined skin models. They guide mechanism research while keeping laboratory marker changes distinct from wrinkle, barrier and age-reversal claims.

Inflammaging testing
Inflammaging describes chronic, low-grade inflammation associated with ageing. Laboratory testing investigates whether ingredients or formulations alter these responses in skin models, providing mechanistic evidence rather than direct proof of wrinkle reduction or reversal of ageing.
Inflammatory markers and cellular responses
Cell culture studies can compare cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 before and after ingredient exposure. Depending on the research question, oxidative stress measurements and senescence-associated proteins help relate inflammatory activity to other ageing processes.
- Pro-inflammatory cytokine expression or release
- Antioxidant enzyme activity
- Cellular senescence markers
- DNA damage and repair-related endpoints
Concentration ranges, exposure periods and controls should be selected for the model. Cell viability measurements help distinguish an apparent reduction in inflammatory markers from a loss of viable cells.
Skin models and stress conditions
Reconstructed skin and other tissue models allow testing under controlled stress, including UV exposure, pollution particles or chemical irritants. These challenges model selected aspects of skin stress; they do not reproduce natural ageing in full.
Time-course studies may examine collagen degradation, elastin-related changes and fibroblast activity alongside inflammatory markers. Results should identify the model, challenge and endpoints assessed so that any claims remain proportionate to the evidence.
Screening a defined inflammatory response
Cytokine measurements such as IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 can compare ingredient responses in a suitable model. Oxidative-stress, senescence and matrix-related measurements can add context when the question calls for them.
Use concentration-response, viability and cell-number information to interpret reduced mediator output. An acute UV or chemical challenge models selected stress responses and does not reproduce chronic ageing in full. Barrier preservation needs a direct functional endpoint rather than inference from cytokines.
The report can support candidate selection, further study design and a bounded mechanistic rationale. These preclinical observations do not secure regulatory approval or independently establish visible wrinkle reduction and clinical anti-ageing performance.
