Microbiome Interaction Studies

What is Microbiome Interaction Studies?
Selected microorganisms or model communities; not proof of universal microbiome balance.
Microbiome interaction evidence does not by itself establish antimicrobial efficacy. Antimicrobial activity testing is a separate service.
Why do you need this service?
Use microbiome interaction studies to investigate selected strains, communities or microbial responses under defined conditions. The model and organisms determine how far the result can inform a skin-microbiota claim.

Microbiome interaction studies
The skin microbiome varies by body site, individual and environmental conditions. Laboratory studies can assess interactions with selected organisms or communities, but there is no single microbial composition that defines healthy skin in every context.
Study questions and methods
- pH effects: measure the test environment and how it influences the organisms studied.
- Growth inhibition: use suitable MIC, time-kill or other validated methods for the organism and material.
- Growth support: compare responses of specified strains under controlled culture conditions.
- C. acnes responses: assess relevant strains with methods suited to this anaerobic organism.
C. acnes is a normal skin resident, and its role depends partly on strain and context. Inhibition alone does not establish treatment of acne or preservation of the rest of the microbiome. Likewise, a species should not be labelled universally beneficial merely because it grows in the assay.
Assess selectivity and relevance
Selective-effect claims need direct comparisons across a justified organism panel or community model, with appropriate controls for pH, vehicle and carry-over. A single-strain test cannot demonstrate preservation of an entire ecosystem, and there is no universal selectivity index that validates every microbiome-friendly claim.
These efficacy investigations are distinct from preservative-efficacy testing of the product itself. Human microbiome or use studies may be needed to connect laboratory effects with the proposed product claim.

Applications of microbiome interaction studies
Defining the comparison
Growth, survival, composition or functional measurements answer different questions. Strain identity, culture conditions and relevant comparators should be reported. A selective effect on a few organisms cannot establish universal microbiome balance, and an inhibition result is not inherently beneficial.
Building appropriate claim evidence
Antimicrobial activity and preservation require separate study scopes. Human community outcomes or clinical benefits need evidence suited to those statements. In the EU, claim evidence belongs in the relevant PIF substantiation rather than being made an efficacy section of the CPSR; no laboratory result confers automatic regulator approval of microbiome-friendly wording.
Cosmetic efficacy testing measures biological endpoints in cell, tissue or ex-vivo models to investigate mechanisms behind proposed benefits. Explore another Cosmetic Efficacy Testing page on cosmetic-labs.com.
