Antioxidant & Redox Studies

What is Antioxidant & Redox Studies?
Assess chemical antioxidant activity and cellular redox responses using defined assays. Radical scavenging, antioxidant-enzyme responses and oxidative-damage measurements answer different questions and do not automatically establish protection of human skin.
Why do you need this service?
Use antioxidant and redox services to investigate chemical radical scavenging, cellular defence pathways or oxidative damage. Select the endpoint for the proposed mechanism instead of treating an antioxidant score as proof of a skin benefit.

Redox and antioxidant defense testing
This in vitro category investigates how an ingredient or suitable test preparation affects oxidative processes. Cell-free chemical screens and living-cell models answer different questions: a reaction with a test radical does not establish uptake, biological activity or persistence in skin.
Chemical and cellular endpoints
- DPPH and ABTS assays: compare scavenging of defined test radicals under specified conditions.
- Cellular oxidative-stress readouts: fluorescent probes such as DCFH-DA or MitoSOX can indicate changes in oxidation-related signals, subject to probe specificity and interference.
- Nrf2 signalling: reporter assays, localisation or target-gene measurements assess pathway responses.
- Glutathione: measurements can examine intracellular GSH levels or redox balance; a level change alone does not prove increased synthesis.
- SOD and catalase: activity and expression assays distinguish enzyme function from abundance.
- Lipid peroxidation: methods such as BODIPY-C11 or TBARS investigate oxidation of lipids, with method-specific limitations.
Study controls and interpretation
Dose selection, viability checks and controls for colour, fluorescence or direct chemical interference are important for cosmetic ingredients. A reduced oxidative signal may reflect toxicity or assay interference rather than protection.
Combining complementary endpoints can strengthen a mechanistic interpretation. The report should specify the model, challenge, exposure and measured effect. It cannot establish durable antioxidant defence or a finished product’s visible anti-ageing benefit without appropriate additional evidence.

Choosing redox evidence for development
DPPH and ABTS comparisons help screen chemical reactivity. Cellular oxidative-stress, mitochondrial and lipid-peroxidation studies address different biological questions under defined challenges. Check interference and viability before interpreting a change as protection.
Nrf2, glutathione and SOD/catalase studies can investigate endogenous responses. Expression, enzyme activity and antioxidant pool size have distinct meanings. Greater pathway activation may reflect stress, and a larger glutathione pool does not establish increased synthesis.
Use the findings to select candidates or plan further product evidence. Laboratory responses alone do not demonstrate calming, tissue repair, protection across real-world pollution exposures or increased SPF. Any human or sunscreen claim needs the corresponding outcome assessment, without assumed study durations or efficacy magnitudes.
Cosmetic efficacy testing measures biological endpoints in cell, tissue or ex-vivo models to investigate mechanisms behind proposed benefits. Explore another Cosmetic Efficacy Testing page on cosmetic-labs.com.
