Penetration and delivery studies

No single method describes every stage between release from a formula and delivery to a skin compartment. Studies should define the analyte, target location and endpoint before choosing a model. Greater penetration is not automatically beneficial, especially when the intended action is at the surface.

Movement across a barrier and superficial deposition

Franz cell diffusion testing measures transfer across a selected membrane or skin preparation into a receptor compartment. Tape stripping analysis samples successive portions of the stratum corneum to investigate superficial deposition, not the full dermis.

Uptake and formulation comparisons

Skin absorption profiling considers retained and permeated material under defined exposure conditions. Active delivery assessment compares how a formulation or carrier makes an ingredient available in the selected model.

Release timing and location

Time-release studies follow release across specified sampling points. Skin layer distribution analysis measures an analyte in separated skin compartments or uses suitable imaging to investigate localization.

Interpretation depends on barrier integrity, recovery, analytical sensitivity and model relevance. Distribution or release data alone do not prove biological activity or clinical efficacy.

Applications

Define a usable outcome

The selected study should produce a protocol and analytical report describing the test system, dose, sampling, recovery, controls and endpoint calculations. Agree whether the result will be mass per area, a recovered fraction, a concentration profile or a comparative release curve. Interpretation depends on a method capable of measuring the analyte in the relevant matrices.

An in-vitro or ex-vivo finding does not automatically establish clinical efficacy, human systemic exposure or therapeutic benefit. Greater penetration is not inherently preferable for a cosmetic: the desired site of action and safety context matter. Use this group to select the appropriate service, then scope that study’s deliverables and limitations directly.
