Cosmetic safety and human tolerance testing

What is Cosmetic Safety Testing?
Cosmetic safety testing investigates possible adverse effects, while safety assessment interprets those findings alongside exposure and intended use. Human tolerance studies examine responses in participants under defined conditions. A laboratory result, a clinical observation and an expert assessment each contribute different information to the safety evidence.
Why do you need this service?
Use these services during development to investigate hazards, assess whether human testing is appropriate and evaluate tolerance for the proposed application. They also help address specific claims, such as dermatologist assessed or hypoallergenic, where the wording must reflect the actual study or evidence review.

Laboratory hazard testing uses cell-based or tissue-based methods to investigate questions such as cytotoxicity, irritation, sensitisation or phototoxicity. These endpoints describe potential adverse effects within the selected model. They do not establish how every person will respond to a finished cosmetic.
Toxicological safety assessment integrates hazard information with exposure. Intended application, frequency of use and the population using the product affect that interpretation. This expert assessment is distinct from a human experiment and is not, by itself, the complete EU cosmetic product safety report.
Evidence for tolerance claims
Human tolerance testing includes appropriate patch or use studies and relevant clinical assessments. Hypoallergenic claim assessment reviews evidence of low allergy potential. A hypoallergenic claim cannot promise that no user will experience an allergic reaction.

Plan the evidence before selecting a study
Give the assessor the intended use and the available ingredient and formulation information. Identify the application site and any proposed tolerance wording. Safety planning should begin early enough for unresolved questions to influence development and the decision to proceed with participant studies.
For a human study, ask which participants and use conditions the findings represent, what clinical observations will be recorded and how adverse responses will be handled. Participant reports of comfort can add context, but they do not replace clinical observations or an exposure-based assessment.
Read conclusions against the tested use
A favourable tolerance finding applies to the study conditions and participants. It cannot establish universal tolerance or efficacy. Cosmetic Labs is a service discovery site where you can identify the relevant testing or assessment route and discuss its scope with a provider.
Cosmetic quality and safety testing examines composition, stability, preservation and selected biological hazards to inform product assessment. Explore another Quality & Safety page on cosmetic-labs.com.
