Stem cell activation

What is Stem cell activation?
Stem cell activation testing investigates how ingredients affect identified hair follicle stem cells and their activation-related behavior. Marker analysis and functional assays distinguish these responses from general follicular cell proliferation.
Why do you need this service?
Use follicular stem-cell studies to investigate responses in a model that actually represents the relevant cell population. Establish cell identity and distinguish activation, proliferation and differentiation.

Stem cell activation
Hair follicle stem cells contribute to cyclical follicle renewal. This service evaluates activation-related responses in an appropriately identified stem or progenitor cell population, rather than using growth of any follicular cell type as evidence of stem cell activation.
Identity and functional response
Cell cultures or suitable follicular tissue models can combine marker analysis with functional measurements. The source and phenotype of the cells should be documented because culture conditions can alter their behavior.
- Proliferation and cell-cycle measurements
- Colony-forming capacity where suitable
- Stemness and differentiation-associated marker patterns
- Viability and concentration-response comparisons
Relationship to follicular signaling
Wnt-related signals and other growth-regulatory pathways may provide mechanistic context. Dermal papilla cells regulate the follicular environment but are not interchangeable with epithelial follicular stem cells. Increased proliferation or marker expression alone does not prove activation of dormant follicles, regeneration, or extension of anagen. Follicle-level studies are needed to investigate whether the cellular response translates into altered hair growth.
Applications of follicular stem-cell studies
Choosing a relevant model
Follicular stem-cell questions require suitable cells or tissue with appropriate markers and controls. Dermal papilla cells are an important follicular signaling population but are not interchangeable with epithelial follicular stem cells. General metabolic viability assays do not directly quantify stem-cell proliferation.
Interpreting activation
Marker, proliferation and differentiation measurements can test a defined mechanism. More metabolic activity is not proof of regeneration or increased hair growth. Findings can guide hair-care research, but delivery, functional follicle behavior and visible product-use outcomes need their own evidence.
