Hair growth efficacy testing

What is Hair growth efficacy testing?
Hair growth efficacy testing evaluates growth-related responses in follicular cell cultures and isolated hair follicles. It measures endpoints such as shaft elongation and growth-phase maintenance before any assessment of visible growth or density in people.
Why do you need this service?
Preclinical hair-growth studies compare isolated-follicle behaviour and selected cellular mechanisms. They help prioritise ingredients, while increased scalp density or reduced hair loss requires appropriate human evidence.

Hair growth efficacy testing
Preclinical hair growth studies investigate whether an ingredient changes follicular activity under controlled conditions. Whole-follicle observations provide a different level of evidence from proliferation of a single cell type.
Follicle and cell models
Isolated human hair follicles can be monitored for shaft elongation, growth-phase characteristics, and tissue viability. Dermal papilla and follicular keratinocyte assays can support mechanism research but cannot reproduce the complete hair cycle.
- Hair shaft elongation relative to baseline and controls
- Anagen maintenance or transition-related observations
- Cell proliferation, viability, and selected growth signals
- Concentration-response comparisons with donor variation considered
Delivery as a complementary question
Skin permeation studies may assess exposure to an active ingredient, using systems such as Franz diffusion cells when appropriate. Total permeation does not prove delivery to a specific follicular cell population, and follicular deposition needs a suitable targeted measurement. Growth-model findings and delivery data can guide formulation development, but neither establishes increased scalp hair density or a clinically effective use concentration without further evidence.
Investigating follicular activity
Isolated human follicles can be monitored for shaft elongation, growth-phase features and tissue viability. Donor variation and starting condition matter. Dermal papilla and keratinocyte cultures provide complementary mechanism data but cannot reproduce the entire hair cycle.
Proliferation needs a suitable measurement. ATP luminescence reports ATP-related signal, not mitosis or energy-production rate by itself. A change in a single cell type cannot establish a fixed extension of anagen duration.
Delivery and product performance
Diffusion or targeted deposition studies can investigate ingredient exposure, but total permeation does not prove delivery to a specific follicular population. Laboratory findings can guide formulation work and later human studies. They do not establish increased hair density, clinical superiority or a guaranteed claims outcome.
