Early Formulation Stability Screening

What is Early Formulation Stability Screening?
Development checks to choose between prototypes; not a shelf-life guarantee.
Why do you need this service?
Use early stability screening to identify prototype weaknesses before transfer or more extensive studies. Stress observations can guide reformulation but cannot automatically establish a finished-product shelf life.

Early stability work helps identify weaknesses and compare formula candidates before scale-up. It examines physical and chemical changes under defined conditions and should remain distinct from a completed shelf-life programme for the final product and packaging.
Storage and stress screening
Laboratories may use elevated temperatures, humidity, temperature cycling or controlled light exposure to investigate likely failure modes. Conditions and observation periods should suit the formulation and packaging.
- Separation, sedimentation or other appearance changes
- Colour and odour changes
- Viscosity, texture and pH drift
- Freeze-thaw or hot-cold cycle responses
- Light-related changes where relevant
Accelerated conditions can reveal instability, but there is no universal conversion from weeks of stress testing to months of consumer shelf life. Results need interpretation alongside real-time studies and other relevant evidence.
Preservation and related testing
Preservative efficacy is a separate microbiological question that may be investigated during development. Challenge testing exposes a suitable product sample to defined bacteria, yeasts and moulds and measures microbial reduction or persistence under the selected method.
Findings can guide preservative optimisation, but do not replace physical or chemical stability measurements. Changes to composition or packaging may require reassessment. Development reports should record sample identity, storage conditions, assessment methods and the reasons for selecting or rejecting a candidate.
Applications of early formulation stability screening
Comparing prototypes
Defined storage or cycling conditions can reveal separation, changes in appearance, pH or viscosity and other relevant failures. Select conditions for the formula and packaging question, documenting sample preparation and observation points. A standard stress period has no universal equivalence to months or years on a retail shelf.
Planning validation
Screening findings can identify revisions and the scope of subsequent real-time, accelerated or packaging studies. Microbiological quality and preservative efficacy require appropriate methods rather than being inferred from visual stability. Market requirements should be assessed for the product; there is no blanket FDA or EU cosmetic-registration shelf-life guarantee or fixed development-time saving.
