Accelerated Stability Testing

What is Accelerated Stability Testing?
Changes during sustained elevated-temperature storage.
Why do you need this service?
Use accelerated stability studies to investigate change under justified stress conditions and compare formulations or packs. Any extrapolation to normal storage needs a product-specific rationale and relevant supporting evidence.

Accelerated stability testing
Within stability and compatibility testing, accelerated studies use sustained thermal stress to investigate how a product changes. They provide an early development signal alongside real-time storage observations.
Study conditions and measurements
Samples are held at selected elevated temperatures with suitable reference conditions. Temperature, humidity where relevant, packaging and sampling points should be justified for the formulation. Pharmaceutical ICH conditions may inform a study design but are not universal cosmetic requirements.
- Appearance, color, odor and texture observations
- pH and viscosity measurements
- Assays of relevant ingredients or degradation products
- Microbiological checks where included in the protocol
- Container and closure observations
Separating stress mechanisms
Heat exposure differs from light-driven photostability testing, which isolates the effects of UV or visible radiation. It also differs from temperature cycling, where repeated transitions are the stressor rather than a sustained warm condition.
Using accelerated results
Findings can guide reformulation, packaging selection and a provisional stability rationale. Elevated heat may trigger changes that do not occur under normal storage, so extrapolation requires scientific justification and confirmation from relevant real-time evidence.
A combined program can use photostability evidence to assess light protection and thermal-cycling evidence to assess transport-related stresses without treating either as interchangeable with sustained-temperature aging.
Applications of accelerated stability testing
Designing informative stress
Temperature, humidity, light or cycling conditions should be selected for the likely failure modes and container. Monitor relevant physical, chemical and microbiological endpoints using suitable methods. A hotter condition can introduce a different degradation mechanism rather than simply speed up ordinary aging.
Interpreting shelf-life evidence
Accelerated results can reveal vulnerabilities and complement real-time observations. They do not universally compress years into a fixed number of weeks or satisfy a minimum shelf-life guarantee. Recommendations should identify the tested pack, storage assumptions, acceptance criteria and unresolved validation needs.
