Lipid peroxidation block

What is Lipid peroxidation block?
Lipid peroxidation inhibition testing measures whether an ingredient limits oxidative damage to lipids in a defined chemical or cellular model. Oxidation products and lipid-sensitive probes provide evidence of lipid protection, distinct from general antioxidant capacity.
Why do you need this service?
Use lipid-peroxidation studies to compare oxidative damage to lipids under specified conditions. These endpoints can guide antioxidant selection but do not determine SPF or sunscreen photostability.

Lipid peroxidation inhibition testing
Lipid peroxidation can propagate oxidative damage in membranes and other lipid-containing systems. Testing assesses whether an ingredient reduces this process under controlled conditions, using a model relevant to the proposed protective mechanism.
Measuring lipid oxidation
TBARS assays detect thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, often reported as malondialdehyde equivalents. Because the reaction is not specific to malondialdehyde, results require careful interpretation and interference controls. Lipid-sensitive probes or more specific oxidation-product analyses can provide complementary evidence.
- Oxidation-product measurements relative to challenged controls
- Concentration-response comparisons with reference antioxidants
- Cell viability where a living-cell model is used
- Controls for sample color, reactivity, and detection interference
Using the results
General assays such as FRAP assess reducing capacity, not lipid peroxidation directly, and should be labeled as supporting measurements. Similarly, radical scavenging does not necessarily predict membrane protection.
Results can compare candidate antioxidants and guide formulation work for skin-care or sun-care products. Evidence of lipid protection under the tested conditions does not alone establish anti-aging performance, sunscreen protection, or regulatory acceptance of broader product claims.
Measuring lipid protection in a defined model
Choose a chemical or cellular lipid system relevant to the research question and apply a documented challenge. Lipid-sensitive probes and oxidation-product measurements provide different views of the response. Check whether the ingredient affects the analytical signal directly.
TBARS measures thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and is often reported as malondialdehyde equivalents; it is not specific to malondialdehyde. Interpret any concentration-response result with the method’s limitations and, in cellular work, viability.
A reduction supports a finding about the measured lipid-oxidation endpoint. It cannot be directly converted to an SPF, a photostability pass or a wrinkle-reduction claim. Formulation oxidation during storage and effects in skin also need separately appropriate models.
