UV absorption & reflection

What is UV absorption & reflection?
UV absorption and reflection testing characterizes how a sunscreen formulation attenuates ultraviolet radiation. Spectral transmission, absorbance, and reflectance measurements help evaluate film performance and photostability. SPF and UVA protection values depend on the applicable test method, not absorption and reflection alone.
Why do you need this service?
Use optical UV studies to compare film transmission, attenuation and spectral coverage during sunscreen development. Protection labels require an applicable validated method and the requirements of the intended market.

UV absorption, reflection, and transmission
Sunscreen films reduce UV transmission through absorption and scattering, including reflected light. Testing characterizes these optical properties across relevant UVB and UVA wavelengths to identify spectral gaps and guide formulation development.
Spectral analysis
UV spectrophotometric methods measure radiation transmitted through an applied film. Appropriate instrument configurations can also assess reflectance. Absorbance inferred from transmission is not always equivalent to true absorption in a scattering formulation.
- Spectral transmission and attenuation across the tested UV range
- UVA coverage and critical wavelength where the method applies
- Changes after a defined irradiation dose
- Comparisons between formulations under the same preparation conditions
Applied-film testing
PMMA plates or other method-specified substrates provide controlled surfaces for in vitro evaluation. Application quantity, spreading, drying, surface roughness, and irradiation conditions follow the selected protocol. A mass per area is not itself a film-thickness measurement, and no single application quantity applies to every method.
Water resistance and stability require their own defined procedures. Optical screening can support development, but labeled SPF or UVA protection must be established by an applicable validated method and the requirements of the target market. Substrate results should not be described as reproducing all real-world skin conditions.
Applications of UV optical testing
Comparing formulation films
Spectral measurements on an appropriate substrate can identify gaps in UVB or UVA attenuation and investigate changes after a defined irradiation dose. Reflectance needs an instrument configuration suited to that measurement. Transmission-derived absorbance can include scattering and should not automatically be called true molecular absorption.
Planning protection validation
Application amount, spreading, drying and substrate preparation follow the selected method. Critical wavelength provides spectral information and does not by itself establish SPF. Water resistance and photostability need defined procedures; ordinary optical screening cannot confer broad-spectrum certification or verify every SPF label value.
