Definition

3D surface topography

Optical 3D imaging captures skin surface shape for quantitative comparison during cosmetic studies. Systems such as PRIMOS or Antera can support selected appearance endpoints, but their capabilities and analysis methods are not interchangeable.

Measurements and image acquisition

Topographic analysis can assess wrinkle depth, surface roughness and changes in local contour. Resolution and measurement precision depend on the system, protocol and site rather than a universal accuracy specification.

  • Baseline and follow-up scans of a defined region
  • Wrinkle or roughness parameter comparisons
  • Local volume or contour measurements
  • Colour-coded surface maps

Consistent positioning, facial expression, lighting and region alignment help limit variation between visits. Assessment intervals should match the intended claim and use period, not a fixed imaging schedule.

Integration into a study

3D measurements can complement clinical grading and participant perceptions. These sources of evidence should be analysed distinctly, since a numerical surface change and a perceived improvement answer different questions.

  1. Define the endpoint and imaging region.
  2. Set acquisition and alignment procedures.
  3. Specify parameter extraction and statistical comparisons.
  4. Retain images, settings and analysis records.

Reports should describe variability and limitations as well as observed effects. A topographic scan does not by itself establish regulatory compliance, skin regeneration or a benefit beyond the measured surface endpoint.

Applications

Applications of 3D surface topography

Capturing comparable surfaces

The protocol should control positioning, lighting or projection conditions, registration and the analyzed region. Instrument capability and repeatability should be established for the feature of interest. Different systems cannot be assigned one universal spatial accuracy.

Interpreting change

Surface depth, roughness or volume-related descriptors can compare relevant time points with a suitable analysis. Circumference, tissue composition and density require other appropriate measurements. A measured surface change does not by itself prove fat loss, biological repair or a standard percentage improvement.
