Product Benchmarking & Reverse Engineering

What is Product Benchmarking & Reverse Engineering?
A technical benchmark or independently developed reference formula, not a promise to recover the exact formula.
Why do you need this service?
Brands use reverse engineering to benchmark competitors, replace an unavailable supplier formula, investigate product failures, or create a lawful alternative with a defined performance target. The service should be conducted with appropriate intellectual-property and confidentiality safeguards.

Cosmetic reverse engineering
Reverse engineering investigates a reference product’s composition and behaviour to inform independent development. It is more than reading an INCI list: the declared ingredients do not reveal every concentration, material grade or processing step.
Characterise the reference
Laboratories may combine targeted chemical analysis with measurements of pH, viscosity, texture, appearance or other relevant attributes. Benchmark evaluation can identify the product properties that matter to the development brief, while analytical findings indicate possible formulation components and constraints.
Develop a reference formulation
Trial formulas test hypotheses about ingredient functions, proportions and processing. Successive comparisons help reproduce selected characteristics, but multiple compositions can produce similar behaviour. Some components or manufacturing details may remain uncertain or undetectable with the chosen methods.
Define the limits and next steps
The output should distinguish measured findings, estimates and formulation assumptions. A new reference formula still needs appropriate validation and safety assessment. Applicable intellectual property, contractual and other legal restrictions should be considered separately; independent development is not an automatic freedom-to-operate conclusion.
