What the assessment covers
The study may use an open, semi-occlusive or occlusive patch protocol, or a supervised use test, depending on the question and the prior safety review. These approaches expose skin differently and cannot be treated as interchangeable. Recruitment criteria, application site, exposure conditions and observation points should be specified in advance.
A dermatologist evaluates signs such as redness and dryness alongside participant reports of stinging, burning or itching. The report should identify the tested formula, participant characteristics, protocol deviations, adverse events and the basis for the medical conclusion. Where instrumental measurements are included, they answer separate, predefined questions rather than substituting for clinical observations.
Using the findings
The deliverable is a study report with tolerance findings and a qualified interpretation for the tested population and conditions. Request a clear distinction between observations, the investigator’s opinion and any proposed claim wording. A sensitive-skin claim requires a study population and endpoints suited to that claim.
Dermatologist-tested describes testing, not a guarantee that nobody will react, a dermatologist recommendation or proof of product efficacy. This assessment does not automatically replace a jurisdiction-specific cosmetic safety assessment. Results can inform formulation changes, instructions for use or further investigation; any revised formula may need its own supporting evidence.
