Sun Protection / SPF Testing

What is Sun Protection / SPF Testing?
A market-appropriate SPF/UV-protection study; UVA and water-resistance scope must be specified.
Why do you need this service?
Use SPF and UV-protection studies to assess a sunscreen against the methods and claims relevant to its intended market. Specify SPF, UVA and any water-resistance requirements separately rather than treating one result as the complete protection package.

Sun protection efficacy testing
Sun protection studies evaluate labelled protection claims for sunscreens and cosmetics containing UV filters. The required methods depend on the market and claim, and may combine human studies with laboratory measurements.
SPF and water resistance
In human SPF testing, a solar simulator delivers controlled UV doses to skin sites with and without a specified amount of product. SPF is based on the ratio of erythemal doses under the test conditions, not a promise of how long any person can safely stay in the sun.
- SPF determination using the selected protocol
- UVA protection assessment using a suitable method
- Water resistance after defined immersion conditions
- Broad-spectrum assessment relevant to the market
Water resistance claims of 40 or 80 minutes are used in the U.S. framework; other markets may use different methods or criteria. Human exposure studies require appropriate ethical oversight, safety review and monitoring.
Photostability and spectral performance
Photostability studies expose a formulation to controlled UV and assess changes in its protective properties. Critical wavelength testing evaluates the breadth of absorption for relevant broad-spectrum requirements, but is not equivalent to SPF or a universal measure of UVA protection strength.
The report should state the method, tested formulation, application conditions, variability and acceptance criteria. Laboratory exposure does not reproduce every condition of consumer use, and one test result does not establish compliance across all markets.
Planning sunscreen protection evidence
The product category and target markets determine which methods and claim criteria are relevant. Provide the final formula and intended use before agreeing the SPF study. UVA protection and water resistance address additional questions and need their applicable assessments.
Spectral breadth and protection magnitude are different properties. Critical wavelength characterizes the breadth of the measured spectrum; it does not establish uniform protection at every wavelength or alone satisfy every broad-spectrum requirement.
Photostability work investigates changes after light exposure under a defined protocol. Acceptance criteria must be justified for the method and intended question. Keep photostability, antioxidant activity and phototoxicity separate from standardized protection claims.
