Skin Hydration Efficacy Testing

What is Skin Hydration Efficacy Testing?
Human hydration measurements appropriate to the protocol.
Why do you need this service?
Use it to compare moisturiser prototypes, investigate immediate or sustained hydration, or substantiate a specific moisturising claim. The proposed wording determines the measurement schedule, comparator, target population and statistical plan rather than the other way round.

Designing a hydration study
The protocol should identify the tested formula, application amount and site, participant eligibility, acclimatisation conditions and any restrictions on other products. Baseline readings and an untreated site, vehicle or reference product help interpret changes. Temperature, humidity and measurement technique need control because they can influence instrument readings.
A duration claim requires measurements that actually cover the stated period and conditions of use. Repeated-use benefits and single-application effects are different questions. Sample size and analysis should be justified for the chosen endpoints, with variability and any missing observations addressed in the report.
Interpreting the deliverable
The study report should provide the protocol, measurement time points, numerical results, comparator analysis and a conclusion linked to the tested claim. Where percentages are presented, the calculation basis should be explicit. Participant questionnaires may add perceived comfort information but should remain distinguishable from instrumental results.
Transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, measures water vapour flux from skin and may provide complementary barrier-related information. It is not interchangeable with capacitance, and a TEWL change alone does not establish barrier repair. Hydration evidence does not establish wrinkle reduction, universal skin tolerance or market authorisation. Claim use must be reviewed for the destination market and remain within the study’s findings.
