Scientific literature support

This secondary-research service contributes to claims substantiation by reviewing evidence already available. It does not generate new primary data. A study on an ingredient can inform a formulation rationale without establishing that the finished product delivers the same benefit.

Search and screen relevant sources

The research brief defines the ingredient or product, intended use and claim question. Specialists search sources such as PubMed, scientific publishers and relevant technical literature, then screen candidate papers for relevance. Where available, full reports should be reviewed rather than relying on abstract conclusions alone.

  • Clinical and laboratory efficacy publications
  • Safety and exposure information
  • Mechanism-of-action research
  • Applicable regulatory guidance and technical references

Evaluate applicability and quality

Assessment considers concentration, formulation vehicle, exposure duration, model or population, comparator and endpoints. Study design, uncertainty and conflicting results matter as much as the number of citations. A higher-dose cell experiment cannot simply be transferred to a lower-dose topical formula or a visible human benefit.

Where published evidence does not answer the question, study-design support can plan targeted primary research.

Report conclusions and gaps

A useful report includes search scope, study summaries, evidence tables, a bibliography and a clear account of limitations. It distinguishes direct support from mechanistic context or unresolved questions. Optional monitoring can identify new evidence that changes the assessment.

Findings can refine subsequent substantiation study plans and be indexed in the evidence dossier. They do not provide automatic regulatory acceptance of a claim.

Applications

Making a literature assessment traceable

Structured literature support organizes existing publications around a defined question rather than generating new experimental results. A transparent report identifies the search strategy, the criteria used to select studies and the evidence included in its synthesis. These details let readers examine how the conclusions were reached.

Separate selection from the strength of evidence

Search and eligibility reporting explain why a publication entered the review. Reporting study characteristics and risk of bias then helps readers evaluate the relevance and limitations of the findings. A bibliography or a document count alone does not provide that assessment.

Show what can and cannot be concluded

The updated PRISMA 2020 reporting guidance calls for presenting study characteristics, bias assessments and synthesis results. It also states that reporting guidance is not a tool for assessing the conduct or methodological quality of a review. Clear reporting therefore should not be confused with proof of a cosmetic effect, a certification or an assurance that a submission will be accepted.

For a cosmetic claim question, the useful distinction is between findings relevant to the proposed use and questions the available studies do not resolve. Where applicability remains uncertain, that uncertainty belongs in the assessment, not in a promise of finished-product performance or patent clearance.
