## What is Mechanism Investigation?

A supported investigation of the targets and pathways behind observed activity.

### Why do you need this service?
Mechanism studies investigate why an ingredient produces an observed response. Select pathway investigation, receptor binding or target identification according to the unresolved question, with confirmatory work where a causal explanation is proposed.

Definition
## Mechanism-of-Action Studies
Observing a biological response does not explain how it occurs. Mechanism-of-action research investigates the molecular events associated with an ingredient’s activity, using complementary experiments to distinguish a plausible explanation from stronger evidence of causation.

### Pathway elucidation
[Pathway elucidation](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/innovation/early-stage-biotech/mechanism-actions/pathway-elucidation) examines signaling networks through gene expression, protein analysis, and functional measurements. It can investigate collagen-related responses or changes in melanin synthesis, but a cell model does not trace every step through to a visible consumer result.

### Receptor binding
[Receptor binding](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/innovation/early-stage-biotech/mechanism-actions/receptor-binding) measures whether an ingredient interacts with a selected receptor and characterizes affinity or selectivity. Radioligand and fluorescence-based assays may be suitable, depending on the target. Separate functional experiments determine what follows from binding.

### Target identification
[Target identification](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/innovation/early-stage-biotech/mechanism-actions/target-identification) investigates which proteins, enzymes, or receptors an ingredient engages. Proteomics can suggest interactions, while gene expression data helps map downstream responses. Candidate targets require confirmation before they are described as driving activity.

[Biological pathway analysis](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/innovation/early-stage-biotech/mechanism-actions/biological-pathway) can also compare cellular signalling responses as part of the investigation.

Combined findings provide a biological rationale for formulation choices and claim development. They complement, rather than replace, product safety assessment and studies measuring benefits in people.

Applications
## Investigating an observed ingredient response
Pathway studies can compare gene, protein and functional responses to determine which signalling processes are associated with activity. They are useful when an ingredient produces a repeatable effect but the downstream events remain uncertain.

Binding studies investigate interaction with a specified receptor. Target identification starts with a broader question about which molecular components are involved. Binding, downstream response and causal contribution need their own evidence, so the report should make clear which of those questions has been answered.

Use the findings to select biomarkers and further experiments. A supported mechanism can explain a result in the tested model; it does not establish that the finished cosmetic produces the corresponding visible benefit in users.
