## What is Ingredient Screening Programmes?

A shortlist selected against defined experimental criteria.

### Why do you need this service?
Use an ingredient screening programme to compare candidates against a defined experimental question and produce a traceable shortlist. Initial hits need confirmation before they become a basis for formulation decisions.

Definition
## Ingredient screening programmes
A screening programme compares candidate compounds, extracts or combinations against defined experimental criteria. It produces a traceable shortlist for further investigation. Automated high-throughput methods may be suitable for some comparisons, but the scale and method should follow the question.

### Choosing the comparison
Biological screens can examine a selected activity or pathway response. Technical screens can compare solubility or compatibility in a specified system. These are different outputs, so the programme should identify which measurements determine ranking.

### From initial hits to follow-up
Initial activity needs repeat testing and checks for assay interference or cytotoxicity where relevant. Concentration-response work helps determine whether a hit merits more detailed investigation. Confirmation supports the next development decision rather than validating clinical performance.

The report should link each candidate to its identity, selection criteria and supporting results. Ingredient libraries and mechanism studies may contribute to the work but are separately scoped services, not presumed subdivisions of every screening programme.

Applications
## Using a screening programme
Define the candidate materials and the property or biological response that will determine ranking. A screen for an assay signal answers a different question from a comparison of solubility or compatibility in a selected base. Record candidate identities and sample preparation so a promising result can be repeated.

A follow-up plan should address reproducibility, assay interference and the concentrations associated with a response. Comparisons can then guide which candidates merit mechanism studies or prototype development. Screening does not establish that a shortlisted material will remain active, stable or safe in the finished formula.
