Repeat-insult patch (HRIPT) | Cosmetic Labs

## What is Repeat-insult patch (HRIPT)?

A repeated human patch-test protocol addressing sensitisation potential.

### Why do you need this service?
Use HRIPT only after an appropriate prior safety review to investigate responses under a defined repeated-exposure protocol. Induction, rest and challenge phases distinguish it from a single irritation patch study.

Definition
## Human repeat-insult patch testing
HRIPT is a controlled human study designed to investigate sensitisation potential after repeated skin exposure. It is distinct from a single irritation patch test and requires prior safety assessment, ethical oversight and clinical safeguards.

### Induction, rest and challenge
During induction, the test product is applied repeatedly under specified patch conditions. A rest period follows before a challenge application, generally at a previously unexposed site, with observations scheduled to detect delayed responses.

Defined induction application schedule and exposure conditions
- A documented rest interval
- Challenge application and follow-up readings
- Clinical grading and review of any reactions
The number of applications, patch duration and reading times depend on the selected protocol. Occlusion changes exposure and should not be described as a direct simulation of everyday cosmetic use.

### Irritation observations and interpretation
Clinicians may grade erythema and oedema using a specified scale during the study. These observations help distinguish irritation from reactions requiring further assessment, but interpretation depends on timing, pattern and medical review.

Single-patch and cumulative irritation studies answer related but separate questions. The HRIPT report should identify the tested formula, participant population, completion and withdrawal data, adverse events and clinical conclusions. A study without observed sensitisation supports only a qualified conclusion under its test conditions, not universal hypoallergenicity or automatic regulatory acceptance.

Applications
## Applications of repeat-insult patch testing

### Scoping the study
A qualified study team should assess product suitability, participant eligibility, ethical safeguards and stopping criteria before exposure. The protocol defines repeated induction applications, a rest period and challenge assessment with documented grading. A short single patch or generic few-day screen should not be represented as a complete HRIPT.

### Interpreting the report
Findings should identify the tested formulation, exposure conditions, participant completion and any irritation or suspected sensitization responses. Absence of a reaction in the study does not guarantee that no consumer will react. HRIPT is not a first hazard-discovery screen for inadequately characterized raw materials, nor automatic proof of hypoallergenicity or universal regulatory compliance.
