Non-Comedogenic Claim Testing | Cosmetic Labs

## What is Non-Comedogenic Claim Testing?

A human study assessing comedone formation under defined conditions.

### Why do you need this service?
Non-comedogenic claim studies evaluate comedone-related outcomes under a justified human protocol. Ingredient rankings and historical rabbit-ear assays cannot alone substantiate a finished product as non-comedogenic.

Definition
## Comedogenicity testing
Comedogenicity concerns the formation of comedones, or blocked follicles. Assessment can help evaluate a finished cosmetic intended for acne-prone users, but should not equate all breakouts with pore blockage or imply treatment of acne.

### Human assessment methods
Studies may use controlled applications with assessment of follicular changes or monitored use under conditions relevant to the product. Clinical examination, microscopy and suitable photographic records can document findings.

Baseline comedone counts or follicular assessments
- Defined application sites and exposure conditions
- Follow-up examination for changes in comedones
- Recording of irritation and other adverse responses
Occlusive patch protocols and normal-use studies expose skin differently and need separate interpretation. Historical rabbit ear assays should not be presented as the default method for contemporary cosmetic testing. Cell proliferation or sebum measurements alone do not establish clinical comedogenicity.

### Claim support and reporting
The study design should define the population, comparator, grading method and criteria used to assess the result. There is no universal ingredient score or simple pass/fail result that guarantees the behaviour of every finished formulation.

Reports should include observed follicular changes, analysis, adverse events and relevant images. A non-comedogenic claim needs evidence suited to the tested formula and intended use, with market-specific review. Even a well-designed study cannot establish that no individual user will develop a breakout.

Applications
## Evaluate the finished product
A human study can compare baseline and follow-up comedone observations under defined use conditions, using appropriate grading, counting or follicular methods. Select participants and sites for the claim, with safety and ethical review before exposure.

Ingredient composition can inform planning, but historical ingredient scores do not predict every finished formula. Rabbit-ear tests have important species and relevance limitations and should not be presented as the routine cosmetic testing route.

Record concurrent skincare, comparator, application and analysis. Report the actual findings and uncertainty. There is no universal score or fixed study period that guarantees a non-comedogenic claim, and absence of observed comedones does not guarantee freedom from acne for every user.
