It may include aerobic microbial enumeration, yeast and mold enumeration, and tests for specified organisms. Sampling plans affect how far a result can be generalized to a batch. ### Method suitability Preservatives and other inhibitory components can suppress recovery during analysis. Suitable dilution, neutralization or filtration procedures must be demonstrated so an apparent absence of growth is not simply an assay artifact. ISO 17516 provides a framework for cosmetic microbiological limits alongside relevant analytical methods. Where pharmacopoeial procedures are appropriate, USP chapter 61 addresses enumeration and chapter 62 addresses specified microorganisms. Chapter 62 is not a yeast-and-mold counting method. ### Results and investigation Reports should state the methods, sample quantities, detection limits where relevant and comparison with the agreed criteria. A result describes the submitted sample and does not by itself prove that an entire lot is uncontaminated or that the preservation system will resist future contamination. Organism identification and a wider investigation can be added when initial findings justify them. Challenge testing remains a separate service for evaluating response to deliberate microbial introduction. Applications ## Reading and using the results The report should identify the submitted sample, methods, quantity tested, count units, reporting limits, specified-organism findings and comparison with the agreed specification. A statement such as not detected refers to the test conditions and sample quantity; it does not demonstrate absolute absence throughout a batch. Representative sampling and traceable handling remain essential. Results can support a quality review or trigger further investigation, but a single satisfactory sample cannot guarantee batch-wide quality or future preservation. A contamination source investigation may require additional environmental, equipment or process samples. Shelf-life assessment and challenge testing answer different questions. Heavy metals, chemical impurities and packaging extractables require separate analytical scopes and are not included in microbial screening by implication.
