Temperature Cycling & Freeze-Thaw Testing | Cosmetic Labs

## What is Temperature Cycling & Freeze-Thaw Testing?

Failures caused by repeated temperature transitions.

### Why do you need this service?
Temperature cycling probes repeated warming and cooling, with freeze-thaw included when justified. The observations can reveal separation, crystallisation or pack failures, but do not directly predict shelf life or reproduce every shipping route.

Definition
## Temperature cycling
Within [stability and compatibility testing](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/in-vitro-testing/cosmetic-quality-testing/compatibility-testing), cycling examines the response to repeated warming and cooling. A formula that tolerates steady storage can still separate, crystallize or change texture when temperatures alternate.

### Designing the cycle
The protocol specifies setpoints, dwell times, transfer conditions and number of cycles. Freeze-thaw testing is one form of thermal cycling, not a necessary feature of every program. Conditions should reflect plausible distribution risks and the purpose of the stress test.

Separation or coalescence in emulsions
- Crystallization or changes in dispersed phases
- Viscosity and texture changes
- Color or appearance changes
- Leakage, seal damage or dispensing changes in filled packs
Samples should be evaluated under consistent conditions, including a defined recovery period where appropriate. Severe stress can reveal vulnerabilities without demonstrating that the same failure will occur in normal use.

### Relation to other stability studies
Unlike cycling, [accelerated stability testing](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/in-vitro-testing/cosmetic-quality-testing/compatibility-testing/accelerated-stability) holds samples at sustained elevated temperature. Neither method has a universal conversion to months or years of shelf life.

A wider program can combine [steady-temperature aging data](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/in-vitro-testing/cosmetic-quality-testing/compatibility-testing/accelerated-stability) with cycling observations to distinguish cumulative thermal change from transition-related failure. [Photostability testing](https://cosmetic-labs.com/services/in-vitro-testing/cosmetic-quality-testing/compatibility-testing/photostability) separately addresses light exposure, which these thermal methods do not isolate.

Applications
## Define the thermal stress
Specify setpoints, dwell and transfer times, cycle count and recovery conditions for the formula, pack and study purpose. A range such as -10°C to 45°C is a possible stress profile, not a universal simulation of international transport. Not every cycling programme needs freezing.

Track appearance, viscosity, pH or other relevant properties consistently. Emulsion separation, crystal formation, leakage and dispensing changes can help identify vulnerabilities. Severe stress may cause failures that do not occur during ordinary storage.

Interpret cycling alongside steady-temperature and real-time observations where relevant. Light exposure requires separate control. There is no mandatory cycle count or general conversion from thermal cycles to months of product shelf life.
