Product–Packaging Interaction Testing | Cosmetic Labs

## What is Product–Packaging Interaction Testing?

Migration, sorption and barrier-related exchanges between formula and pack.

### Why do you need this service?
Use product-packaging interaction studies to investigate changes in the actual formula and contact materials under defined conditions. Physical compatibility, chemical migration and dispensing behavior require appropriate endpoints.

Definition
## Package-product interaction testing
The container and formula can affect each other throughout storage. Packaging constituents may migrate into the product, while fragrance, preservatives or actives may be absorbed into or adsorbed onto packaging. Oxygen or moisture transmission can also influence product quality.

### Chemical and barrier-related studies
Laboratories compare filled packs under defined conditions, using suitable controls or alternative containers to investigate the source of a change.

Targeted migration or extractables and leachables investigations where justified
- Assays for losses of selected ingredients from the formula
- Weight change and volatile-loss measurements
- Barrier-property measurements for oxygen or moisture when relevant
- Monitoring of appearance, odor, pH and other quality indicators
Visual changes or pH drift can flag a problem but cannot alone identify a migrated substance. Targeted chemical analysis may be needed to determine its identity and significance.

### Final-pack performance
Interaction work may include dose delivery, clogging, seals and leakage after formula contact. Mechanical drop tests, temperature cycling and preservation studies are complementary activities and should be explicitly included when required.

Findings support selection of a container that suits the formula and intended use. Accelerated storage can reveal risks, but a short exposure cannot automatically be translated into a fixed shelf life or a guarantee against recalls.

Applications
## Applications of product-packaging interaction studies

### Investigating contact effects
A study can compare appearance, pack integrity, product loss or selected chemical changes during storage. Analytical work should target relevant leachables, extractables or ingredient losses with methods suited to the matrix. A visual check cannot exclude all chemical interactions.

### Supporting pack selection
Results can guide material choice and identify the need for toxicological or fuller stability assessment. Stress observations have no automatic equivalence to a fixed shelf life. No short test guarantees that a container will never react, and compatibility evidence does not establish child resistance or every packaging requirement.
