pH and viscosity profiling | Cosmetic Labs

## What is pH and viscosity profiling?

Acidity and flow behaviour measured under defined conditions.

### Why do you need this service?
pH and viscosity profiling compares acidity and flow behaviour under defined measurement conditions. Use it to investigate a formulation change, set an appropriate specification or track a product during storage.

Definition
## pH and viscosity profiling
These measurements provide complementary information about a cosmetic formula. pH describes the acidity of an appropriate aqueous phase or preparation, while viscosity describes resistance to flow under specified test conditions. Tracking both can reveal changes that a visual check misses.

### pH measurement
Calibrated meters and suitable electrodes are used with a documented sample preparation and temperature. Direct measurement, dilution and extraction can give different results, so the procedure must remain consistent. Conventional pH measurement may not be meaningful for an anhydrous product without a defined preparation.

Time-point measurements can identify drift relevant to ingredient stability or preservative performance. Target ranges depend on product chemistry, intended use and safety evaluation rather than a universal range for cleansers, serums or moisturizers.

### Viscosity and flow behavior
Flow curves across defined shear rates
- Yield behavior in structured gels or emulsions
- Temperature dependence
- Recovery after shear and thixotropic behavior
Viscometer or rheometer geometry, speed, equilibration and sample history affect the result. Profiles can guide pump selection, processing and application behavior, and repeated measurements can show thickening or structural loss during storage. They support, but do not replace, sensory evaluation and broader stability testing.

Applications
## Using acidity and flow measurements
pH measurements need a suitable preparation and method for the product format. A value in an aqueous product is not directly interchangeable with a measurement after dilution, and some non-aqueous products do not have a meaningful undiluted pH.

Viscosity depends on temperature, shear conditions and measurement geometry. Record these with the result, particularly when comparing prototypes or batches. Different product formats need different target ranges rather than a universal acceptable viscosity.

Profiles can identify a change that needs investigation. They do not alone establish skin compatibility, preservation or shelf life, and a short measurement programme cannot replace evidence collected over the required storage conditions.
