## What is Glucose utilisation?

Glucose utilisation testing evaluates how skin cells take up and metabolize glucose after exposure to an ingredient. Uptake assays, glucose consumption, and lactate or energy measurements help characterize changes in cellular fuel use without assuming that greater uptake means improved skin function.

### Why do you need this service?
Glucose-utilisation studies compare uptake, consumption and related metabolic responses in skin cells. Complementary lactate, respiration or ATP measurements can help explain the response, but greater glucose uptake does not by itself establish improved skin function.

Definition
## Glucose utilisation in skin cells
Glucose supplies carbon and energy for skin-cell metabolism. Testing in keratinocytes or fibroblasts examines how an ingredient changes glucose uptake and subsequent use, helping distinguish substrate transport from downstream metabolic activity.

### Uptake and metabolic readouts
Fluorescent glucose analogues or tracer methods can assess uptake under defined conditions. Measuring glucose depletion from the medium and lactate release provides additional information about metabolism. Uptake of an analogue alone does not quantify complete glycolytic flux.

Glucose uptake and consumption relative to appropriate controls
- Lactate production and, where relevant, oxygen consumption
- ATP content alongside cell viability and cell number
- Concentration-dependent and time-dependent responses

### Pathway analysis
Enzyme activity, metabolite profiles, and expression of metabolic genes can help investigate a response. For example, hexokinase measurements address an early step in glucose metabolism, whereas respiration assays provide a different view of energy handling. The selected panel should match the proposed mechanism.

These findings can rank ingredients and guide further studies. They do not establish anti-aging efficacy or distinguish a superior product from a moisturizer without evidence on the intended skin outcome.

Applications
## Distinguishing glucose transport from metabolism
Fluorescent analogues or tracer methods can assess uptake, while medium glucose depletion and lactate release provide information about subsequent handling. The method and normalisation should be stated so an uptake signal is not described as complete metabolic flux.

Keratinocyte or fibroblast studies can compare ingredients under defined conditions, with appropriate controls and viability assessment. Oxygen consumption or ATP-related measurements address separate bioenergetic questions when included.

### Interpret the direction of change
Increased uptake may reflect altered demand, stress or other metabolic changes rather than a benefit. Results guide mechanism work and formulation research; they do not automatically prove restored mitochondria, cellular renewal or reduced signs of fatigue in users.
