Skin Radiance Efficacy Testing | Cosmetic Labs

## What is Skin Radiance Efficacy Testing?

Brightness, luminosity and tone-evenness assessment.

### Why do you need this service?
Radiance studies assess defined brightness, luminosity or tone-evenness outcomes during human product use. Agree what radiance means for the proposed claim before selecting colour measurements, imaging or assessor endpoints.

Definition
## Skin radiance efficacy testing
Radiance is an appearance concept that needs a clear study definition. Lightness, tone uniformity, surface reflection and perceived glow may contribute differently to the intended benefit and should not be treated as one interchangeable measurement.

### Instrumental and visual endpoints
Colorimetry and spectrophotometry quantify selected colour properties before and after product application. Standardised imaging documents appearance under consistent lighting, while clinical grading or participant ratings can address perceived luminosity.

L* values describing skin lightness
- Individual typology angle where relevant to colour analysis
- Melanin index as a separate pigmentation-related endpoint
- Digital photography with a defined assessment method
Lightness or a lower melanin index does not by itself establish improved radiance. The choice of endpoints should reflect the actual product claim and intended users.

### Study design options
Split-face studies, full-face applications with appropriate controls and comparisons with benchmark products can be used according to the research question. Blinding can reduce bias where practical.

The protocol should specify participant characteristics, application conditions, assessment timing and analysis. Reports should distinguish immediate optical effects from changes observed during repeated use, and separate instrumental findings from subjective impressions. Study size and duration need justification rather than a standard panel size or testing window.

Applications
## Evaluating a radiance claim
Colour coordinates and controlled images can describe aspects of skin appearance, but no single reading captures every meaning of glow. The endpoint should identify whether the study concerns brightness, uniformity or an assessor’s judgement of radiance.

For formulation comparisons, use a suitable reference condition and consistent capture or measurement settings. Participant impressions can provide additional experience evidence, with the report keeping those findings distinct from instrumental results.

The assessment schedule and population should match the claim. Avoid supplying a percentage increase as though it were an expected result: only the observed study finding can support that wording. A human appearance result does not automatically validate an ingredient mechanism or worldwide compliance.
