## What is ROS scavenging?

ROS scavenging testing for sun-care products evaluates antioxidant activity relevant to UV-induced oxidation. Chemical screens characterize radical scavenging, while UV-challenged skin-cell assays assess oxidation and damage endpoints. These measurements complement, but do not replace, SPF or UVA testing.

### Why do you need this service?
ROS-related studies compare antioxidant activity and oxidation responses relevant to sun care. Chemical screening and UV-challenged cell models can guide antioxidant selection, with conclusions limited to the radical systems and damage endpoints measured.

Definition
## Antioxidant activity in sun-care testing
UV exposure can generate reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage. This service examines whether an ingredient or formulation limits selected oxidation responses, distinguishing direct antioxidant activity from the effects of reducing the UV dose reaching cells.

### Chemical screening methods
DPPH and ABTS assays measure scavenging of defined assay radicals, not the full range of species generated by UV in skin. ORAC provides another method-specific antioxidant readout. Results may include concentration-response curves, inhibition values, or reference-equivalent activity.

Sample blanks and optical-interference controls
- Reference antioxidant comparisons
- Defined reaction conditions and exposure periods
- Suitable reporting of concentration-dependent activity

### UV-challenged cellular models
Skin-cell studies can assess oxidation-sensitive probe signals, viability, or lipid damage after controlled UV exposure. SOD activity measurements address an endogenous enzyme response, rather than direct scavenging alone. Product UV attenuation must be considered when interpreting reduced cellular oxidation.

These studies help compare antioxidant systems and investigate sun-care mechanisms. An antioxidant signal does not establish an SPF value, broad-spectrum coverage, or a visible anti-aging benefit, and cannot be generalized to complete prevention of UV damage.

Applications
## Screening antioxidant systems for sun care
DPPH, ABTS and ORAC provide method-specific chemical comparisons. They do not reproduce the full range of UV-generated species in skin. Results need suitable blanks, reference materials and reaction conditions, especially with coloured or turbid sunscreen samples.

UV-challenged skin-cell studies can assess oxidation-sensitive probes, lipid damage or viability. Product UV attenuation should be considered when interpreting reduced oxidation. Enzyme activity is a complementary response rather than a direct measurement of every scavenging mechanism.

These observations can inform formulation choices and further experiments. They do not establish superior photoprotection, photoageing prevention, an SPF value or a universal antioxidant-potency range for successful products.
