## What is Microbiome friendly formulation testing?

Microbiome friendly formulation testing examines how a finished product affects selected skin microorganisms or model communities. It assesses compatibility and community responses against defined criteria rather than certifying a universal state of microbiome balance.

### Why do you need this service?
Microbiome-friendly formulation studies compare effects on specified organisms or model communities against defined criteria. Use them to investigate compatibility without treating the result as a universal certification of microbial balance.

Definition
## Microbiome friendly formulation testing
A formulation’s effect on microorganisms depends on its full composition, exposure conditions, and the organisms studied. This service evaluates those effects using a defined panel or community model, with the meaning of a microbiome-friendly outcome specified before testing.

### Formulation compatibility
Culture methods can measure the survival, growth, or metabolic activity of selected commensal strains after exposure. Products containing live microorganisms may also require strain viability and matrix compatibility studies, while ingredients intended to promote growth need separate stimulation measurements.

Effects of the complete formulation and relevant ingredient controls
- Exposure conditions reflecting dilution or contact time where appropriate
- pH and preservative interactions
- Repeat exposure or recovery measurements where supported by the model

### Community and selectivity assessment
Mixed-community models and sequencing can reveal shifts not evident in a single-strain assay. Sequencing does not necessarily establish organism viability, and greater diversity is not universally the desired endpoint. Comparison across organisms is needed to assess selective effects. Findings do not alone confirm better barrier function, clinical microbiome stability, or elimination of harmful organisms while sparing all commensals.

Applications
## Assessing a defined compatibility question
Provide the finished formula and intended skin use so the organisms, exposure and comparison can be chosen appropriately. Viable counts and community-composition measurements describe different endpoints. Any definition of compatibility should be agreed before the results are interpreted.

An ingredient-level MIC or selectivity profile can inform research but does not establish the effect of the finished formula. Likewise, reduced inhibition of a selected strain does not show a beneficial response across all resident organisms.

Preservative challenge testing asks whether the product is protected against microbial growth. It does not substitute for microbiome compatibility, and compatibility testing does not replace preservation assessment. Claims about sustained human microbiome outcomes require suitable product-use evidence.
