## What is Stress response proteins?

Stress response proteins testing measures cellular protein responses to defined environmental challenges and cosmetic ingredient treatment. Heat-shock proteins, antioxidant enzymes, and related pathway markers help characterize adaptation or injury when interpreted with functional and viability data.

### Why do you need this service?
Stress-protein assays examine how treated skin models respond to a defined environmental challenge. Protein expression and enzyme measurements should be interpreted with viability and damage endpoints, since induction may indicate adaptation, ongoing injury or both.

Definition
## Stress response proteins
Skin cells change their protein expression and activity when exposed to environmental stress. This service assesses how a cosmetic ingredient influences that response. Increased expression of a stress protein can indicate adaptation, ongoing injury, or both, rather than automatically proving resilience.

### Protein and pathway analysis
Relevant measurements may include HSP70, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, or glutathione S-transferase. NRF2-related signaling can help explain changes in antioxidant and metabolic responses.

Protein abundance measured by immunoassay or Western blot
- Enzyme activity where it is part of the hypothesis
- Concentration-dependent and time-dependent changes
- Oxidative-damage and cell-viability endpoints

### Defined pollutant challenges
Labs may use selected particulate matter, cigarette smoke extract, ozone, or metal challenges where suitable for the model. Exposure conditions and controls must be stated, because one laboratory challenge cannot reproduce every urban environment.

Pre-treatment, co-treatment, or recovery designs answer different questions about the ingredient’s role. Reports should connect protein responses with any measured reduction in damage rather than infer protection from marker induction alone. The findings support a focused mechanistic account, not a general claim of skin detoxification.

Applications
## Relating stress proteins to a challenge
Selected particulate matter, ozone or other suitable exposures can be studied in an appropriate skin model. HSP70, HSP90, HSP27 and antioxidant-related proteins provide different views of the response. The assay should state whether it measures abundance, modification or activity.

Pre-treatment, co-treatment and recovery designs answer different questions. A measured reduction in damage can provide functional context for protein changes; higher expression alone does not demonstrate resilience or protection.

### Using the evidence
Compare candidates under the same exposure and report the model, controls and observed variability. Phase-II enzymes or metallothionein measurements may add mechanistic information when justified, but they do not quantify a general detoxification capacity or distinguish it from cleansing without direct supporting endpoints.
