## What is Antimicrobial Activity Testing?

Inhibition or killing of selected microorganisms; not a product preservation challenge test.

Microbial growth inhibition does not by itself demonstrate a microbiome-friendly effect. Microbiome interaction studies answer a different question.

### Why do you need this service?
Use antimicrobial activity testing to compare inhibition or killing of selected microorganisms by an ingredient or formulation. Define the organisms, growth state and endpoint; product preservation and skin-community effects require separate study scopes.

## Antimicrobial activity testing
This efficacy service measures inhibition or killing of selected microorganisms by an ingredient or formulation under defined laboratory conditions. The panel, growth state and endpoint should follow the research question. It is distinct from testing the preservation of the product itself.

### Activity endpoints
Broth dilution can determine a minimum inhibitory concentration where the method is suitable. Recovery-based time-kill studies investigate survival, with neutralization and carryover controls as needed. Diffusion methods can provide screening information, but diffusion and sample chemistry affect zone size. Biofilm responses require a method designed for that growth state.

### Pathogen inhibition and interpretation
Pathogen inhibition testing focuses on specified pathogenic or opportunistic organisms, with strains and conditions identified. Antimicrobial results do not establish infection prevention or treatment of acne or wounds. Effects on skin communities require appropriate comparative or community studies rather than assuming that inhibition is microbiome-friendly.

### Preservation is a separate question
Preservative challenge testing evaluates contamination control in the assembled cosmetic formula. Ingredient potency or a selected-organism screen does not establish finished-product preservation, shelf life or complete safety. Claims and classification require review for the intended use and market.

### Defined pathogen panels and assay controls
Pathogenic or opportunistic organisms should be identified by species and strain, such as Staphylococcus aureus where relevant to the research objective. Opportunistic pathogens may behave differently across environments and host conditions. Include growth, sterility, vehicle and reference controls. Validate neutralization and check carryover for viable-count assays, with exposure conditions suited to the organism and sample.

Selective activity requires comparison of target inhibition with effects on other relevant microorganisms. An inhibition result alone does not demonstrate preservation of beneficial flora. Infection prevention, wound treatment and acne treatment claims have separate evidentiary and regulatory requirements that a cosmetic antimicrobial screen does not resolve.

Applications
## Applications of antimicrobial activity testing

### Comparing activity
Broth dilution, viable-count or suitable diffusion methods can investigate a specified organism panel. MIC describes growth inhibition under the test conditions; killing needs an appropriate recovery-based endpoint. Diffusion, sample solubility and neutralization or carryover can affect apparent activity.

### Choosing the next study
A research result can guide candidate comparison but does not demonstrate infection prevention or a microbiome-friendly effect. Preservation challenge testing addresses contamination control of a finished cosmetic and is not interchangeable with skin antimicrobial activity. Claims should remain within the measured endpoint and intended market classification.

### Planning pathogen-inhibition studies
Specify the species and strains, sample preparation and exposure conditions in the study brief. Growth inhibition and viable-count measurements answer different questions, so select an endpoint that matches the development objective. Control sample interference and carryover when comparing samples, and investigate biofilm behaviour with a study designed for that growth state rather than inferring it from planktonic results.

Results can guide formulation research and selection of candidates for follow-up testing. Claims of selective effects on skin microbiota require comparisons with other relevant microorganisms, not an assumption that beneficial flora are preserved. Finished-formula preservation needs its own protocol. Pathogen inhibition results do not establish shelf life, regulatory acceptance or treatment of acne, wounds or infection.
