## Definition

## Panellist evaluation
Sensory panel studies characterise how cosmetics are perceived during application and wear. The panel type matters: trained assessors describe attributes consistently, while target consumers provide evidence about liking and preference.

### Sensory profiling and discrimination
Defined procedures and rating scales help compare formulations under consistent conditions. Triangle tests can investigate whether samples are perceptibly different; preference rankings answer which samples participants favour. Neither method alone explains every driver of purchase behaviour.

- Texture, spreadability and absorption
- Residual skin feel
- Fragrance intensity and persistence
- Colour, appearance and visual appeal
- Ease of application
Sample preparation, presentation order and assessment timing should be specified. Where possible, coding and controlled presentation reduce expectations linked to branding.

### Consumer response and follow-up
Consumer panels may evaluate satisfaction, perceived performance and willingness to use a product again. Home-use extensions can capture experience over a longer use period through diaries and questionnaires, but introduce different conditions from a controlled sensory session.

Acceptance criteria should be defined for the project rather than assumed as universal category thresholds. Reports should identify panel training, recruitment, methods and analysis, preserving the distinction between descriptive sensory findings and consumer preference data.

## Applications

## Refining the sensory brief
Controlled comparisons can investigate drag, tack, spread, residue or fragrance intensity across prototype variants. Coding, presentation order and consistent application help limit expectation and carry-over effects. Triangle tests investigate whether a difference is perceptible; they do not establish which sample consumers prefer.

Target-consumer panels can assess liking, satisfaction and willingness to use. Recruitment and questionnaire wording affect the result, and a home-use study introduces different conditions from a controlled sensory session.

Reports should identify panel training, sample presentation, response scales and analysis. There is no universal acceptance percentage for every category. Sensory findings can guide formulation choices but do not independently validate physiological efficacy or predict future sales.
