UV photography | Cosmetic Labs

## What is UV photography?

UV photography records skin appearance using a defined ultraviolet imaging method. Controlled illumination, camera settings and positioning allow comparison of selected optical features across study visits, alongside other clinical or instrumental assessments.

### Why do you need this service?
UV photography provides controlled visual records of selected optical features. Use it for documented comparisons with a defined UV modality, keeping image contrast separate from SPF or a direct diagnosis of sun damage.

Definition
## UV photography for clinical studies
UV imaging can reveal contrast or fluorescence patterns that differ from visible-light photography. The information obtained depends on whether the system records reflected UV or UV-induced visible fluorescence, as well as its filters, illumination and analysis method.

### Image capture and comparison
Protocols should specify the imaging modality, exposure conditions, subject preparation and camera settings. Consistency reduces variation but does not eliminate every source of bias or prove that all visible differences result from the product.

Baseline images before the defined treatment period
- Follow-up images at planned study visits
- Consistent positioning and lighting
- Defined image regions and analysis methods
Product residue and changes in capture conditions can affect the optical result. Image contrast should not automatically be interpreted as subsurface damage, melanin change or texture improvement without supporting evidence.

### Documentation and data management
Study records should retain consent information, image identifiers, acquisition metadata and the link between visits. Equipment checks and standard operating procedures support traceability.

- Document equipment settings and maintenance.
- Use consistent image capture procedures.
- Maintain participant and visit identification securely.
- Store original images with controlled access and backups.
Privacy and retention arrangements must suit the study and applicable requirements. UV photographs can support a defined endpoint, but do not automatically meet every regulatory evidence standard or establish a product’s efficacy.

Applications
## Using UV images in a study
Capture conditions should identify the illumination, camera configuration and positioning relevant to the selected modality. Consistency supports visit-to-visit comparison, while product residue or changes in capture can affect the image independently of the intended skin response.

A feature seen in a UV image requires interpretation within that method. Contrast should not be treated as a direct map of melanin density or subsurface damage without suitable validation. Quantitative analysis needs a specified method and appropriate reference.

Images can complement a clinical or instrumental assessment. They do not determine SPF, prove damage repair or establish generic regulatory compliance. Any brightening or anti-ageing statement should remain tied to the endpoint and evidence actually collected.
