Standardized photography | Cosmetic Labs

## What is Standardized photography?

Standardised photography documents cosmetic study outcomes using consistent lighting, positioning and camera settings. Comparable baseline and follow-up images support visual grading and, where validated for the endpoint, quantitative image analysis.

### Why do you need this service?
Standardised photography records appearance using consistent lighting, positioning and camera settings. Defined grading or image analysis can evaluate changes, while illustrative before-and-after images alone do not establish efficacy or safety.

Definition
## Standardised photography
Controlled photography records appearance and visible reactions during cosmetic studies. Its value comes from consistent capture and a defined assessment method, not from treating any before-and-after image as proof of efficacy or safety.

### Capture protocol
Lighting, camera settings, distance and subject position should be specified for each body area. Subject preparation and relevant factors such as facial expression or product residue also need consistent handling across visits.

Controlled lighting intensity and arrangement
- Fixed distances and angles
- Colour calibration procedures where relevant
- Standardised subject preparation
Visible-light photographs, UV images and dermoscopic images use different techniques and should not be conflated. The selected approach must match the intended appearance endpoint.

### Image analysis and records
Clinical graders or suitable digital tools may assess features such as pigmentation, surface appearance or application coverage. Quantification requires a defined method, consistent analysis regions and appropriate controls.

- Matched baseline and follow-up image sets
- Documented scoring or measurement procedures
- Analysis of change and variability where planned
- Retention of original images and acquisition metadata
Reports should distinguish illustrative images from images used as study data. Standardisation supports comparability but does not guarantee regulatory acceptance, and any processing should preserve the integrity of the evidence.

Applications
## Creating comparable image sets
Control lighting, distance, angle and relevant participant preparation across visits. Colour calibration and consistent expression can be important for facial outcomes. Preserve acquisition metadata and original files so comparisons remain traceable.

Trained grading or suitable digital analysis can assess pigmentation, wrinkles, application coverage or visible reactions when the method is defined. UV, visible-light and dermoscopic images are different techniques and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Image processing must preserve evidence integrity, and selected examples should not imply a universal response. ISO 24444 concerns in vivo SPF determination, not a general cosmetic-photography protocol. Standardisation supports comparison but does not guarantee regulatory acceptance or replace the broader study analysis.
