## What is Clinical Imaging Microscopy?

Clinical microscopic analysis examines selected skin, follicular or tissue features using magnified imaging. Dermoscopy, confocal microscopy and histological methods can document changes relevant to a study, with measurements and interpretation specific to the technique used.

### Why do you need this service?
Clinical microscopy documents defined skin structures or sampled tissue in a research programme. Formulation particles and crystals belong to analytical microscopy, while clinical images require appropriate acquisition, analysis and study context.

Definition
## Clinical microscopic analysis
Microscopic analysis provides detailed visual records of skin structures or sampled tissue within a clinical research programme. It differs from microscopic characterisation of formulation particles or crystals, which addresses the material rather than a human skin response.

### Skin imaging methods
Dermoscopy documents surface and follicular features. Confocal microscopy can resolve selected structures within accessible skin layers. The depth, resolution and visible features depend on the instrument, so one modality should not be presented as equivalent to every other microscopic technique.

Baseline and follow-up image comparisons
- Pigment distribution within the imaged region
- Follicular or surface structural features
- Defined tissue or cellular measurements where the method supports them
Image acquisition and analysis need consistent positioning, settings and region selection. Microscopy does not directly visualise skin hydration or prove a cosmetic benefit simply by producing a high-resolution image.

### Histology and documentation
Where tissue sampling is justified and appropriately approved, prepared sections and staining can document architecture, collagen-related features or selected inflammatory markers. Sample preparation, staining and image interpretation should be described in the protocol and report.

Deliverables may include annotated images, measurement data and an interpretation of observed differences. The evidence should remain tied to the sampled region, method and study design. Safety or efficacy conclusions require relevant endpoints and controls rather than microscopy alone.

Applications
## Documenting a skin response
Dermoscopy and confocal microscopy resolve different features and depths. Select the modality for the intended surface, follicular or tissue endpoint, with consistent positioning and settings at baseline and follow-up. A sharper image alone is not proof of a cosmetic benefit.

Where tissue sampling is justified and approved, histology and staining can examine architecture or selected markers. Sample preparation and analytical methods should be documented. Ultrasound is a separate imaging modality, and microscopy does not directly visualise skin hydration.

Deliverables can include original and annotated images, defined measurements and interpretation. Conclusions remain limited to the sampled area and study design. Direct imaging of formulation penetration requires suitable detection methods and cannot be assumed from ordinary microscopy.
